Intermediate Drawing: Gesture Drawing Exercises

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas gesture exercise on newsprint. Medium Charcoal Pencil. Did not like the resistance of the charcoal on newsprint. Had trouble keeping a good handle on the tool. No editing except cropping. Cloudy daylight so used umbrella lighting.
2001: A Space Odyssey gesture exercise on newspring. 4B Pencil. My second favorite tool. Still didn’t feel as fluid as I would have liked, but felt second best. No editing except cropping. Cloudy daylight so used umbrella lighting.
Yojimbo gesture exercise on newsprint. Colored pencil. Had to sharpen a lot. 3rd favorite tool. Some fluidity, but had to sharpen twice during the short clip. First one photographed: Tried photographing with tape behind, and it was visible. Tried using clips afterwards, and it was even more mangled. No editing except cropping. Cloudy daylight so used umbrella lighting.
Old Boy gesture exercise on newsprint. Pitt Artist Pen. My favorite tool of this exercise. Fairly fluid. No editing except cropping. Cloudy daylight so used umbrella lighting.
Brazil gesture exercise on newsprint. 2B pencil. One of my least favorite tools on this exercise — I pressed too hard, and I ended up poking into the newsprint. No editing except cropping. Cloudy daylight so used umbrella lighting.

Overall, I feel like my drawings were one-dimensional without much time to think/draw multiple values. I was focused on holding my tools and movement of my wrist/shoulder as well as trying to continue drawing without stopping. I don’t have much experience photo editing, so I will spend some time learning that more this semester. I did watch the suggested youtube video for taking photos, and I ended up using a lot of that information. I have snapseed on my phone, but I will have to learn to use the editing tools to good effect.
