The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree

Why did you choose the objects in your drawing?

The saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” makes me uncomfortable, so I decided to confront that discomfort and make a still life representing the saying with objects that I really enjoy and take comfort in.

I used a money tree that I bought on the advice of a classmate. I chose this to represent both a new AND ephemeral object with happy connotations.

The golden apple is an object of great personal value. I was a teacher before art school. I found this golden apple at a thrift store, and I loved the color and solid feel of it in my hand. I also appreciate the reminder of what I have been and what I could still be if I choose. Enduring.

I love my handmade (not by me) yarn bowl. It’s incredibly useful, and pretty to my eyes — also of great personal value. I feel the same about the planter bird.

I choose the different yarns to convey both my love of all yarn arts and my appreciation of calm, comfort, and warmth. I chose the colors to round out my color palette of secondary and tertiary colors.

The knitting needles were chosen to emphasize the love of yarn and art making. They were also added as an attempt to help the viewer move around the still life picture. I’m not sure if that was effective or not…

What is the point or meaning of this drawing?

The point of this drawing is to re-contextualize the idea of “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. In lieu of any negative connotations I hold consciously/unconsciously, I wanted to make art based on the saying that is pretty and comforting and full of potential.

What was the feeling and/or mood you were going for in your drawing?

I wanted to create a “safe”, positive, and warm feeling with my drawing — a mood of openness and growth beyond expectations.

18' x 24". I used a printed out photo to work off of.
